Advantages: It is an immediate results test, and the decrease in thickness can be plotted.
It is a volumetric inspection that, when faced with a planar type discontinuity inside the material, has the same response capacity as a flaw detector and can be used on any type of material (Steel, Aluminum, Copper, Plastics, Ceramics, etc.).
It can be done on parts, equipment and pipes up to 500 ° C.

Disadvantages: The main limitation is in materials that are very porous or of large grain size, such as gray cast iron or similar characteristics.
